Sofa tables, you might think that you know what they're for, but in fact they are no ordinary table.
Sofa tables are extremely versatile and can be used in a number of different ways in a number of different places throughout your home. Their name might imply that they are simply for using by or behind a sofa. However, that is just the beginning as to how they can be utilized.
For example, let's say that you have an empty space at the end of your hallway and are sick of trying to find ways to fill the space up, well, this is a fine example of one of the ways sofa tables can be used. It would be a nice option for putting in that space for not only decorative purposes, but functional ones as well since you can use it to set down and display different things like family photos or vases filled with flowers. One would also be a nice place to put a phone and a note pad to jot down notes whenever someone calls.
Another nice spot where sofa tables would be a fantastic, useful choice is in your dining room. Yes, your dining room! One is an ideal spot for setting down extra dinnerware and if you purchase one that has shelving and drawers, you could use it to store any number of items including napkins, table cloths, glasses, and anything else you might need to put away.
Those spots aren't the only places where you could use sofa tables too because there are many other areas in your home where one would be a nice fit. They include putting one in an entryway, an entertainment space, a larger bedroom, and you could even place one in a bathroom, yes, a bathroom. Like, you could use it to fill an empty corner and place different toiletries in it and on it.
Not only a great choice for how versatile and useful they can be, sofa tables are also extremely pleasing to the eye because of the materials they are crafted from and how those materials are styled through different stains, paints, and detailing. For instance, if you want to add a modern feel to that hallway of yours, you could get one crafted from metal and glass that features a sleek, clean look with a black powder coated stainless steel base that supports a clear glass table top. Or, if you are more into things that have an antique look, then you could purchase one crafted from pine that is filled with elegant carvings while being finished in a rich distressed yellow finish. These are just a few of the options that you can get too as there are many others. A fast way to check them all out is by hitting the Internet and doing some online shopping.
In the end, if you think sofa tables are ordinary, think again. They are extremely versatile and would be one fantastic investment.

Sofa Tables - They're Not Just Any Ordinary Table
Munire Furniture and Cribs
By Robin O'Brien
You really shouldn't just buy a Munire crib. The company designs furniture that is to be used for a child's lifetime. It specializes in making convertible cribs and nursery furniture that looks just as good in a child's bedroom as it does in the nursery.
Munire is an independent manufacturer of nursery furniture and is based in New Jersey. The company has a reputation of producing finely crafted nursery furniture with elegant designs with special emphasis on detailing and finishes.
The company's philosophy is that nursery furniture should serve not just your baby, but your child as it grows right through to adulthood. To this end, it only makes convertible cribs. The Munire collection of beautiful baby bedding can be converted from crib to toddler to day bed right through to full size bed.
The company's excellence in both design and construction has ensured that many consumers' reviews highly rate Munire cribs and furniture. Trade reviews also give the company glowing reviews. Munire is the only furniture manufacturer to receive "Best" ratings in both the crib and dresser categories in Baby Bargains (6th edition, Denise and Alan Fields, Windsor Peak Press).
If you're looking to buy nursery furniture you should definitely take a look at what Munire has to offer. Pay special attention to the quality of the joinery used in the construction of its armoires, dressers and convertible cribs. All Munire furniture is made from hardwood, some with additional veneers. Also take a look at the extra detailing on its furniture; it takes time and money to go that little step further.
The current collection offers you nursery furniture with various themes. The Munire Antigua crib brings to mind hot afternoons in the Caribbean, with its use of woven rattan and sculptured moldings. The Munire Newport crib is a favorite. It has an elegant, gently curving rail with fluted legs. It comes in various finishes of cherry, espresso, classic chestnut, rubbed antique white and rubbed antique black. For a simple crib, take a look and the Essex. It is a plain, relaxed baby crib that could be used in both a traditional and contemporary nursery.
You should be aware that some of the company's cribs and nursery furniture is now made overseas in the Far East. Recently there have been concerns about the levels of lead found in paint finishes on some children's products made in the Far East. However, you can rest assured that this is not a problem with its furniture.
All Munire convertible cribs made in the Far East are made in Indonesia and are tested regularly by Intertek (testing lab for JPMA- Juvenile Product Manufacturers Association). In addition, Munire cribs and furniture have JPMA certification as well as meeting or exceeding the standards established by A.S.T.M (American Society for Testing and Materials) and the Federal Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Munire cribs and furniture aren't going to be everyone's choice. The company's furniture is expensive and their designs lean heavily on older styles and may just be a little too decorative for the tastes of many. But, if you like craftsmanship that is still affordable, with intricate designs of times past, then a Munire crib and furniture set may be what you're looking for.
Follow the links for the Munire crib as well as other convertible baby cribs like the Bassett crib.

Amish Rustic Log Furniture
By Jason Cheney
Amish Log furniture brings direct to your home a harmonious balance with nature. These handcrafted, primal, Amish Log furniture designs provide a warm comfort to the inhabitants of your home. For decades the Adirondack, Lodge or Cabin décor style has been well-known as the most comforting and comfortable design style available. "Great Camp" design originated in the mid-1800s with wealthy native New Yorkers building their country retreats in the nearby Adirondack Mountains. An architectural legacy of William West Durant, it has influenced design exteriors and interiors for over 150 years.
The style blends seamlessly with others of that era such as Arts and Crafts Mission Movement or Craftsman furnishings. Now, through the incomparable woodworkers of the Amish communities, you too can recreate the surroundings of the great outdoors in your own country Lodge.
Your rustic log furniture is understated and classic. Simple decorating ideas and good furniture in neutral and natural materials create a retreat with an ageless appeal. The Great Camp style is cozy enough to wrap around you like a flannel shirt in winter but stylish enough to be admired by guests. Because they were created from nature each one can be said to be a one-of-a-kind. The Amish Log Furniture series has armoires, hope chests, nightstands, dressers, gun cabinets, benches, canopy and bunk beds, end and coffee tables in artisan hand crafted, old fashioned, traditional designs. Your only problem will be in deciding between skin peeled pine or red cedar.
The primary feature of the Amish Log furniture is the use of materials from the forest.
Ornamentally these pieces are hand decorated with bark, branches and twigs. Each log and twig is especially chosen for their shape and texture; even down to the decorative "twigs" trim. All of the Amish drawer boxes are fully dovetailed with slab fronts. Full extension ball bearing glides are selected for ease of use and durability as your furniture is used day after day for generations.
The Amish hope chest is the perfect gift for a graduation celebration, newlyweds or a young adult to store their precious mementos in. The hope cedar chest was created by Amish wood workers to be enjoyed for a lifetime and handed down to the next generation. This chest also makes an inventive coffee table or bench for the foot of the bed.
In the double drawer armoire you find more than a closet. This, like all Amish Log furniture is an heirloom design. With the height at a full 53", it is perfect as a baby shower gift for a child's personal clothing, books, diapers, etc. The substantial five drawers and a door armoire wardrobe is a great choice as a bachelor's chest. The drawers can hold t-shirts, socks, undergarments, while the doored cabinet can hold stacks of jeans or winter clothes.
Take your once ordinary bedroom to the comfort level of a log cabin retreat deep in the woods with your own Amish Log furniture. What a great bed to display a family heirloom quilt or a luxurious fur, faux or real, across its foot. Worried about losing feminine design elements? There is nothing more romantic or feminine that a storybook canopy bed made from solid wood. Because of its design, by nature rustically resilient, this furniture can withstand more wear than other designs. Add a great log bench at the foot for dressing in the morning or for folding your clothes or bedspread on in the evening.
Step up your living room simply by adding the Log design to your common area. Your new Cabin showplace will have unique personality and style. With the simple purchase of a log coffee and end table you can bring your home into the Adirondack era. Careful placement of some beautiful Mission arts and crafts, a few baskets and a plaid throw will create a warm place your friends and family will feel welcome in.
The inherent nature of Great Camp décor elements is to highlight playing in the great outdoors. It is a perfect way to show off or display vintage collectibles from camping and picnicking to sports, fishing, and hunting. The Amish Log gun case is a cabinet that will hold things from your everyday hunting shotgun to grandpa's vintage Winchester rifle. This Amish artisan gun cabinet holds up to 6 long guns, shot guns or rifles. To ensure safety the door and drawer lock securely. The drawer features English (full) dovetail construction with a slab front and full extension drawer glides.
It is a bold and rewarding challenge to recreate the tradition of the great camps of the Adirondack Mountains with yourlog furniture. Cabin and Great Camp designs are as timeless as Mission and as practical, too. Log furniture is an investment in artistic design work. These furnishings are refined but casual and relaxed and create a gathering friendly atmosphere. Only premium woods, stains and finishes are ever used with Amish craftsmen because they are created to last a lifetime.
Making your home the comforting place that really expresses who you are is what log furniture is all about. The rustic feel and strength hand made furniture has, whether is pine, cedar or hickory is like no other. Sustainable Furniture For Your Home
By Virginia Ginsburg
With green products swiftly making their way into mainstream consumer products, icons of trees and leaves can be seen everywhere as symbols of environmentally-conscious products.
But you may be surprised at how you can directly impact trees when you make green purchases. Scientists estimate that we are losing more than 137 species of plants and animals every day due to rainforest deforestation. This deforestation is happening partly to support the furniture market. Tropical hardwoods like teak, mahogany, rosewood and many other timbers used for furniture and other wood products are in high demand even as their supply dwindles.
In addition to deforestation, the furniture industry is a heavy user of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's), which are found in almost all finishes and paints. Conventional lacquer is one of the most hazardous in terms of VOC emissions. Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) and particle board, which are typically used in less-expensive furniture construction, commonly contain the carcinogens urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde.
In response to the dangers posed on a global and local scale, a non-profit industry association called the Sustainable Furnishings Council was formed in 2006 to promote sustainable practices among manufacturers, retailers and consumers. The organization is leading the charge to raise awareness of the sustainability issue in furniture and construction by assisting companies in adopting good practices and helping consumers become more educated about the issues at hand.
Members of the association take steps to accomplish the following:
1. Minimize carbon emissions
2. Minimize waste stream pollutants
3. Avoid using un-recyclable content
4. Avoid using primary materials from unsustainable sources
Next time you are in the market for wood products, consider the following guidelines:
1. Where does the wood come from? You want to look for wood that has been legally harvested from responsibly-managed forests. Whenever possible, look for reclaimed or recycled woods. Also available are a number of fast-growing woods, including bamboo, which are neither threatened nor threaten other species in production.
2. Is the wood certified by a third party? In addition to the Sustainable Furnishings Council, you can look for certification from other third-parties including the Forest Stewardship Council and the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.
3. Is the manufacturer working to reduce energy use? In addition to the actual manufacturing energy cost, consider the distance that your wood has traveled. Cargo ships have become one of the nation's leading sources of air pollution, threatening the health of millions of people.
4. Where was the furniture made? Look for products that were made close to your home and sourced from raw materials from within 500 miles. This will reduce the distance traveled and also support grassroots initiatives that are working to improve the sustainable furniture industry as a whole.
5. Were any high Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) finishes used to create the product? Varnishes and lacquers are the most common offenders, but many paints also contain high levels of VOCs. Look for water-based finishes that have low or no VOCs.
Supporting sustainable furnishings will make a big impact on the interior of your home's health as well as the world as a whole. Another benefit is that many of the sustainable furniture products are beautifully crafted. You can find an extensive list of options at
www.greenpeople.org/furnishing/html.
Sustainable furniture may also have some interesting stories associated with it. For example, one company is currently advertising products made of Douglas Fir that was deconstructed from warehouses at the Alameda Naval Air Station and Redwood from decommissioned water tanks at Camp Pendleton. Thus, in addition to getting beautiful sustainable furniture, you are getting a little bit of history, too.

The Benefits of Building Your Own Furniture
By Bill William
Building furniture isn't for everyone. It requires a significant amount of patience and skill, and many people are more comfortable just going out to the local furniture store to purchase the pieces that will be the most appropriate in their home. For that select few that chooses to build their own furnishings, however, the process can be extremely rewarding. You'll have the ultimate say on every intricate detail, and the end product will reflect your style. Every time you look on the work you've created, you'll feel enormous pride. You'll also probably save a significant amount of money, especially if you compare the price of furniture in high-end stores to your own quality creations. Finally, if you persevere and keep at it, eventually you'll create furniture of a high enough caliber to be passed down through generations and generations of your family.
Are you just starting to build your own furniture? There are a ton of resources on the web that you can access for anything from basic ideas to intricate plans that will guide you through the process. Most of these plans are free, but there are some sites that require you to purchase their plans. Keep in mind that this isn't necessary, however. You should be able to find great blueprints for free if you spend some time searching.
You'll also want to purchase a set of tools to start working. You don't need to go out and set yourself up with the latest and greatest in woodworking equipment. In fact, that's a pretty silly thing to do, because you won't know if you really enjoy building furniture until you try it! Instead, buy the tools that you need as you require them. For example, for many projects you don't need to buy a saw. Instead, have the hardware store make the cuts for you. That will save you money initially, and if you decide that you want the convenience of being able to cut wood at home, you can always purchase a saw later. Also, you may want to consider renting equipment rather than purchasing it, in case you decide not to keep up with your new hobby. That way, you won't be stuck with expensive gear.
In the beginning, the furniture that you produce won't be perfect, and that's OK. Instead, concentrate on improving in the areas in which you are the most deficient. Perhaps you didn't sand a surface well enough-next time, pay more attention to that part of the process. Each distinct action has repercussions, of course. For example, if you don't cut a piece of wood to the right dimension, chances are that it will never fit perfectly, and you'll end up with a piece of furniture that doesn't quite look right.
Building your own furniture is a great way to fill your home with beautiful pieces that you can be proud of. While this hobby may initially provide more consternation than anything else, eventually you'll come to realize that the process was perhaps even more rewarding than the end result.

Novelty Cuckoo Clocks
By Wendy Pan
Cuckoo clocks have delighted the world for generations. Their wonderful and intricately carved traditional designs have always been popular both as accurate timepieces and as decorative items. The clocks are synonymous with The Black Forest and have been made there traditionally since the mid 1700s. It is thought, however, that there were made in other areas prior to this. Although the traditional clocks have retained their popularity and appeal, we are now seeing a great many novelty cuckoo clocks on the market.
With many clocks using battery power rather than the traditional wind up mechanisms, clock with an hour chime are much less expensive to produce and have a greater flexibility when it comes to their design. The modern novelty cuckoo clocks do sometimes take advantage of the more modern battery system although some still rely on the wind up mechanism. Some of these clocks should perhaps not be labelled as cuckoo clocks and many of the traditional clock collectors would not consider them in the category at all. Often the term will just refer to the fact that the clock strikes the hour with the appearance of an animal through a doorway or window. The fact that this may not be a cuckoo seems secondary in some cases. The term cuckoo clock is often just an easy descriptive name.
Some novelty cuckoo clocks are very traditional and retain much of their Bavarian and Black Forest character. There have always been two main designs of cuckoo clock; the hunter style and the chalet style. To a traditionalist, the chalet style clock is often thought of as being a bit of a novelty. These have sometimes evolved into very fancy clocks indeed incorporating cattle with cow bells and traditionally dressed characters. One that remains constant with these timepieces, however, is the presence of the cuckoo when the clock chimes. Another novelty addition which is sometimes found on these clocks, is a girl on a swing where the pendulum hangs. Even though some of the smaller novelty clocks do not use the hanging pendulum as a wind up mechanism, the will often have a small decorative pendulum which is sometimes a novelty character.
Also, on the market today, you can find some cuckoo clocks which have evolved with a variety of animals rather than just the cuckoo. These are very popular with young children and are named cuckoo clocks just because they feature the animal coming through the door to announce the hour. This could be a cow, dog, horse or similar popular animal and is accompanied by the appropriate "Moo" or "Woof".
Whether you opt for a traditional Black Forest clock or a novelty cuckoo clock, some of these timepieces are truly lovely. Their appeal may be in the intricate workmanship or just their novelty value. Whichever is the case, they are sure to make a lovely and practical addition to a room.
