When I was a kid I used to watch the workers in my Dad's office work away in their little modular office furniture cubicles. It was like watching little worker ants dutifully managing the one or two tasks that they had been assigned for life, thinking nothing of themselves. I didn't think the people seemed very happy. To me it seemed so drab and gray in there. The tables and desks didn't have any character, were usually heavy metal and much to small to be any real use. Everything was institutional and bland. I wondered how those poor people could get through the day without going crazy. Maybe they didn't.
Of course my Dad's office was different. He was the boss so he got to enjoy the perks of having his own office. No boring modular office furniture in there! It seemed so big and impressive. I remember a big leather studded chair and tall wall shelves full of important looking books and figurines. Plenty of tables and chairs, and even a couch. There were always stacks of file folders and papers on his desk that made me feel like I was in a very important place. We used to hide under his desk, or behind the large plants by the window. We could imagine that we were almost anyone in that place. But usually it was enough to know that Dad would protect us from anything as dreary as ordinary work tasks. I admit, it was a charmed youth! But, oh how the times have changed!
Now, as I sit here in my ergonomically correct office chair, surrounded by truly functional modular office furniture, I am struck with an irony. I am not the boss, but I have nicer furniture around me than my father did all those years ago in his lavish office. Modular office furniture has come so far. I have the privacy and quiet I need. I have lots of storage space and shelving. No more drab colors, but instead, a beautiful mahogany (well melamine anyway) desk, bookcase, and credenza. And all richly appointed, warm, and elegant. My work area is truly a versatile and functional surrounding, but at the same time stylish and welcoming. I don't dread coming into the office. How could I with modular office furniture appointed with designer handles, ball-bearing drawer slides and so much room for my projects that I can arrange everything just how I want it without feeling like my space cramps my style and creativity.
And that is one of the nice thing about modern modular office furniture. It makes workers (myself happily included) more productive and happy. It can be expanded as the needs of business grows, and it comes in a huge variety of configurations, colors, and styles. Office desks, conference tables, reception desks, comfortable chairs, efficient filing systems, printer stands and computer stations, complete workstations and cubicles; all of these modular office furniture pieces and arrangements have changed the office landscape into a modern wonder of efficiency and peace; good enough for the boss. Well, for a modern worker whose dad was a boss anyway.

The Miracle of Modern Modular Office Furniture
Wood Console Tables - The Perfect Piece of Furniture For Narrow Spaces
By Jennifer Akre
Wood console tables are usually configured as a rectangular cabinet-like piece of furniture, especially useful in a hallway or other somewhat narrow area. So if you have such an area just crying out for a piece of furniture to fill it, and fill it with style, you will most definitely want to consider the use of them. Such tables are one of the most versatile pieces of furniture you can find, great for small spaces but able to add some always needed storage to your room as well.
Wood Console Tables Are Available in Many Styles
Yes, you can find these decorative pieces of furniture in a great variety of styles, thus making them versatile enough to fit into the theme of almost any room. Most have flat backs to fit tight up against a wall, keeping them in their place. However, they don't all have flat fronts! Many come in half-moon configurations, giving some added pizazz to what might have previously been a dreary piece of empty wall.
Many wood console tables have drawers, making them a storage option as well. But as you'll see when you start shopping for the perfect console table for your home, these drawers aren't all in the same location. They may vary in number as well. Some drawers are right up under the top with a shelf or two below while other drawers are situated at the bottom of the table, allowing a usable shelf or two to be positioned above them.
Then there are the shelves themselves to consider. Wood console tables sometimes have two or three shelves under the top allowing for all sorts of décor items to be added. Books, flowers, decorative boxes or figurines can find a home on these shelves, making the console table a focal point and a storage unit all in one.
You'll find wood console tables in mission style, butler style and even ones to which you can add a hutch, making them an ideal piece for dining rooms. Now, you can store Grandma's best china in the hutch, linens and silverware in the drawers of the console table and some of your beautiful serving pieces on the shelves. Sometimes though, there will be neither shelf nor drawer, thus making this piece of furniture a true table.
Wood Console Tables Are Available in Many Finishes
Of course, as you would expect, wood console tables are available in most, if not all, of today's favorite finishes, such as oak, pine, maple, or dark cherry. You might even opt for a console table in varnished knotty pine or other wood that looks good in its natural state, especially if the rest of your home was created using a more natural style or if you're putting your console table in a cabin or other super casual setting. There are also painted ones, so just about any color or finish your home's décor might require is available. Shop around and you'll find just the style and finish you want. Then simply enjoy!

Bedroom Furniture Sets - What You Should Get When You Buy Yours
By Jennifer Akre
Once upon a time, the majority of bedroom sets only had a few pieces involved, the bed, a dresser and possibly a nightstand. Today, bedroom sets are made of any of a combination of pieces of furniture, and can suit nearly any bedroom size or look.
Here's a look at some of the pieces of furniture you may be able to choose from when considering new bedroom furniture sets:
• Bed Frame - This is literally the frame of the bed and the centerpiece of bedroom furniture sets. The purchase of a bed frame does not include the mattresses, but just the frame that goes around it, to make it look like a piece of furniture, rather than a pair of mattresses stacked atop one another.
• Dresser - A dresser is the most common place to put folded clothes and undergarments in a bedroom. These are those long sets of drawers that often have two stacks of 2-4 drawers side by side. Often these pieces are coupled with a mirror on the top.
• Chest of Drawers - If you are building up instead of wide with bedroom furniture sets, you may want a chest of drawers. A chest of drawers is a stack of drawers, one on top of the other. These are also called high boys as well as a chest of drawers. For those who are trying to conserve floor space in the bedroom, a chest of drawers is a better option than a dresser.
• Nightstand -You will always need a place beside the bed to set a glass of water, a book, glasses or anything else you would like close to the bedside. This is also a great place to put a lamp, so you can turn it on and see where you are going if you need to get up in the middle of the night.
• Armoire - The armoire can be a magnificent centerpiece of bedroom furniture sets. Armoires are large furniture pieces that can serve a number of purposes. First, the bottom level of most armoires have drawers, to store any of the items you may need to put away in your bedroom. Then comes the top of the armoire. There will be two doors that you will pull open to unveil either a secondary set of drawers or a shelving unit. The shelving unit is often used to hold a television or other entertainment items for your bedroom.
• Lingerie Chest - A lingerie chest is a piece of bedroom furniture sets that has often been forgotten in modern furnishings. Often made with felt-lined drawers, lingerie chests are meant to hold more delicate clothing items.
• Entertainment Center - Just as important to the bedroom as the bed is, in many cases, the bedroom entertainment center is considered a must-have piece in today's bedroom furniture sets. Many people spend a lot of time kicking back in bed and relaxing after a long day. For this reason, many bedroom furniture sets now offer matching entertainment centers to hold a television, cable box, DVD player and any other home theater items needed to complete the set up.

Wood File Cabinets - How To Select The Right One
By Leon Tuberman
File cabinets come in many sizes, styles and levels of quality. In addition to offering a way to organize and access your documents, file cabinets can also become flexible and useful pieces of furniture that can be used in almost any room of your home or office.
You can buy either metal or wood cabinets file. Wood, specifically solid oak, is the most attractive and durable material to look for. It will last a very long time and be an attractive addition to your home or office.
The many styles of solid wood file cabinets include Mission, Contemporary, and Traditional and come in several standard sizes, which include:
Letter sized file cabinets, which generally hold only 8.5" x 11" paper, but can also be used for 8.5" x 11" legal size files.
Legal size file cabinets, which generally hold both 8.5" x 14" and 8.5" x 11" paper.
Lateral file cabinets, which come with 2 or 3 drawers and generally hold 8.5 x 11" and 8.5" x 14" paper.
Personal file cabinets that are generally smaller and hold only 8.5 x 11" letter files
The letter or legal size file cabinet can be used the alternate way by moving the metal brackets.
Wood file cabinets are available with 2, 3, 4 or even 5 drawers. When deciding which one would work best for you, consider not only the amount of file storage needed, but also the other uses you have for the file cabinet as a piece of furniture. It could be used as an end table, a storage chest, a credenza, a DVD or video tape cabinet, a nightstand, or a place to keep your printer, fax machine, copier, or coffee machine.
If you want to place some of the above items desk height, a 2-drawer cabinet allows you a 30" high platform. If you line several up in a row you can have quite a large surface. A lateral file also offers you this advantage without a seam in the middle. For this purpose, look for file cabinets with flush sides so there won't be any gaps between the cabinets.
A 3-drawer file cabinet, which stands about 43" high, offers more storage per square foot of floor space and you can still put plants or other light items on top. A 4-drawer file cabinet, which is about 55" tall, offers a tremendous amount of storage, as does an even taller, but rare, 5-drawer file cabinet. We don't recommend putting anything other than a very light item on top.
SAFETY FIRST!
Any piece of furniture that is holding a lot of weight can be dangerous. An important safety issue with file cabinets is the danger of tipping and crushing. Large and heavy file drawers can cause the file to tip forward. Therefore, several things can be done to minimize this danger.
Do not fill the file on the top drawer while leaving lower drawers empty.
As mentioned above, do not open more than one drawer at a time.
Attach file cabinets to the wall to prevent tipping.
Where possible, put your heaviest items in bottom drawer (to act as an anchor).
Do not put attractive nuisances like TV's and games on top of tip prone furniture unless it is properly tethered. Children may climb up to retrieve the remote or turn on the TV with horrible consequences.
CHOOSE A HIGH-QUALITY WOOD FILE CABINET
The lowest quality wood file cabinets are generally made for self-assembly by the customer. This is usually more difficult than you expect and utilizes "cam" assembly hardware. You'll also want to stay away from file cabinets that are made of particleboard. Even though the tag might say it's made of wood, don't be fooled because that description might still be referring to particleboard, so beware. According to the Furniture Manufacturers Association, solid wood includes particleboard. What you really want to look for is SOLID wood-either solid oak, pine, or cherry.
Another thing to keep in mind is that in order to hold a lot of weight a file cabinet should have glue screws and clamps--not cam locks in particleboard.
Next, know the difference between printed grain, genuine wood veneer, and solid wood without particleboard. The easiest way to tell if a piece of furniture is made of solid wood is to look at how the grain is running. If the end grain runs the wrong direction (perpendicular to the other grain), it is most likely veneer. I'm not saying veneer doesn't have its place if properly done, however, you should not be misled and be able to purchase what you are looking for/know what you're looking at.
Wood drawers are best made with English Dovetailed joints. If a drawer is assembled with cams, it won't hold together. A drawer glued and stapled can be an acceptable assembly method if the staples are only holding the assembly together until the glue dries.
Another important element of a file cabinet is the hardware used to open the drawers. Check the runner system. Make sure it pulls out smoothly and evenly? How does the tracking system work? If the drawer pulls out less than 90%, you will loose storage space and it will be difficult to retrieve your documents from the back of the file. Euro type roller glides are unacceptable for any file cabinets. This type of roller system works with two interlocking wheels on a spindle and it can't take the heavy weight of a file drawer and will likely not last very long at all. The better glide system for file cabinets is a full ball bearing--full extension slide system with at least a 100 lb weight rating.
Also, consider whether or not you want to lock up your drawers. You can put a lock on each individual drawer. This is the easiest way to lock up any particular drawer from which you want to keep prying eyes. You can also lock up all the doors by using a key just on the top drawer and the mechanism will lock all the doors below. Interlocking systems on quality wood files can be a costly and sometimes can hang-up creating access problems.
The wise consumer will take all these pointers into consideration when selecting a wood file cabinet. If you stick to solid wood and good glides and stay away from self-assembly, you'll have good access to your files and your cabinet will last a very long time.

Tips to Tame a Teenager's Bedroom
By James T. Allen
A teenager's bedroom can be a scary place in an otherwise lovely, well-organized home. It's a place where the blinds stay tightly closed to keep any trace of sunlight out, a place where loud music and foul odors waft from under the seemingly always closed door with the obligatory "Keep Out" sign prominently displayed. It's a place where a layer of dirty laundry keeps the carpet pristine and where dishes mysteriously vanish like it was some sort of Bermuda Triangle or black hole.
Unless, of course, it's the room of a teenage girl. This is an entirely different animal. Loud music and even louder phone conversations may emanate through the shut door, but the odor wafting from under the door is a perfume-lotion-hair product-nail polish mixture putrid enough to make eyes water from three rooms away. Laundry still lines the floor, but hers is a mixture of dirty and clean, a dresser and laundry basket all in one.
The previous descriptions are very over dramatized, obviously, but there's a good chance that if there's a teenager living under your roof, his or her room is probably the most disheveled and may exhibit varying degrees of the aforementioned traits. If they are worse than described above, call in a hazmat team, if not, perhaps some new teen-friendly bedroom furniture can do the trick.
Organization is key for any room, but is especially important for a teen's bedroom. Add shelf and storage space with a new bed featuring under bunk drawers and a handy bookcase headboard, ideal for everything from schoolbooks to random knick-knacks. A tall 5-drawer chest or a 6-drawer dresser with mirror should help them remember what color the carpet is, while a compact student desk is a great option for organizing school stuff and providing a place to study. Other unique options include media cabinets, storage lockers, and wardrobes, all designed to keep junk and clutter off the floor and into some sort of assigned area.
For a HUGE selection of contemporary bedroom furniture your teenager will love, plus some great new platform beds check out the Eco-Furniture website today.

How Safe is Your Child's Bunk Bed?
By Laura Davis
The main danger with bunk beds is the ability to fall from the top bunk and injure themselves in a variety of ways; a child cannot be monitored throughout the night or for every minute that they are playing in their room so there is always a risk of a child falling from the top bunk height and seriously hurting themselves, along with this is the risk of a child underestimating the height and jumping during playtime or a child slipping through the guardrail spacing and becoming strangled.
Although a fall alone could serious hurt a child, furniture surrounding the bunk bed can pose a further risk. Objects such as blind cords are extremely dangerous; they can easily become wrapped around a child's neck and several deaths have occurred due to the child's dressing gown cord wrapping around the neck during the fall. Such cases are very rare but they do raise the question of how safe our children are in bunk beds. However, bunk beds are an excellent way of construing some responsibility upon your child and as mentioned previously they are an excellent space saving device, so they shouldn't be dismissed completely.
There are several guidelines that should be followed and communicated to your child to ensure that they operate the bunk bed like an 'adult', if you have more than one child include them when discussing the bunk bed rules. Although it is recommended that children under the age of six are not allowed to sleep or play on the bed, and bear in mind that even if they are supposed to be sleeping on the bottom bed they will still somehow end up in the top bunk at some point. If you do happen to have a younger child in the house it is worth purchasing a bunk bed that can be separated into two singles until the younger child is old enough to sleep on a bunk bed.
Ensure that you purchase a bunk bed that has secure guardrails that prevent a child from easily rolling off the bed, guardrails can pose a risk for strangulation therefore if there is a gap of at least 31/2 inches (89 mm) between the lower edge of the guardrails and the upper edge of the bed frame cover this with some sort of board to prevent the child slipping through.
Choose a ladder that is fixed- a ladder that has a gradient rather than being completely vertical may make it slightly easier for ascent and descent. Several things you can do at home to further increase the safety of the ladder is to purchase some sticky back rubber, available from most hardware shops, and put it on the steps and handles to give them some grip. It is also worth purchasing a night light so that during the night your child can clearly see the ladder.
Encourage safety when children are playing the bedroom; accidents often happen when a child kicks the underside of the bunk bed above resulting in it falling down on them. To prevent minimize the chance of this happening ensure there are secure slats under the mattress preventing it from falling through.
The main emphasis when buying a bunk bed is teaching your child the safe practice of using it; they need to understand the importance of safety and what can happen if they do not act in a safe manner.
Archers Sleep Center stock a wide range of children's bunk beds all finished to the British Safety Standard, many available with matching furniture.

A Bunk Bed For Your Child's Room
By Thomas B. Chuong
One of the best choices for your child's bedroom is a bunk bed. Not only will your children love their new bed but it is an ideal way to provide more sleeping space for siblings or for when your child has an overnight guest.
The use of this sleeping furniture in a child's room has been around for many years and for very good reason. There are usually only so many bedrooms in a home and when you have more children than rooms, doubling up is going to have to occur. Children have been sharing rooms with their siblings for as long as there have been families living in homes. The invention of the bunk bed allowed children to have their very own bed and still leave enough space in the room to move around.
Today's bunk bed is even more creative than the original models that you might remember from your youth. Today, you can choose a loft bed traditional two twin bed or one that has one twin and one full size bed. There are many variations on the sleeping furniture today which allows you to choose the model that works best for your family.
When you are choosing a bunk bed for your child's room, make sure that you select one that is solidly built and that follows safety requirements for this type of furnishing. Look for loose hardware so that you don't risk your child falling from the upper bunk. The ladder that is used on the bunk bed should be able to withstand your child climbing up and down into their bed for a long period of time without wearing or a loosening of the bolts.

Bunk Bed Safety - Tips For Parents and Kids on How to Use Bunk and Loft Beds Safely
By Mary Engle
Kids of all ages love Bunk Beds and Loft Beds because they offer more floor space, a little adventure, and a cozy nest for sleeping. Bunk Beds, futon bunks, and ladders are now available online so they are easier than ever to purchase.
As wonderful as they are, bunk beds have inherent dangers associated with them. There is no substitute for sitting down with your child on Day 1 of the new bunk bed and carefully explaining the safety rules. Ask kids to repeat what you have told them to ensure that they have understood. Here are some basic safety tips to avoid injuries using a bunk bed. Some are for parents in the initial set up and some are for kids to remember every day that they use the bunks.
Top Bunk Safety
On the top bunk, use only mattresses sized to fit perfectly. The top bunk is generally a twin, so use only a twin-size mattress: 39" x 75".
Don't use a mattress more than 8" thick. The guardrails on most bunk beds are designed to accommodate up to an 8" thick mattress. Thicker mattresses place the sleeper too close to the top of the guardrail, rendering the rails ineffective in preventing falls.
Always use guardrails on all sides of the top bunk, particularly on the long sides. Check to ensure that the surface of the mattress is 5" or more below the top of the guardrails. If you need thick or heavy comforters on top of the mattress, you might want to select a thinner mattress so the sleeper stays well below the top of the guardrails. 6" thick mattresses are often sufficient for kids, whose lighter weight does not require extremely thick mattresses.
Never allow a child under 5 years old on the top bunk. While kids under 5 may be agile and have good climbing skills, they may need a few more years to refine their internal sense of caution and safety that would help them regulate their own behavior on the top bunk.
Teach children always to use the ladder for getting up and down from the top bunk. Many bunk and loft beds have slats on either end that may look like climbing structures that kids see at the playground. However, only the ladder is specifically designed to support their weight that is increasing with each passing year.
Teach children to climb the ladder only while facing the ladder. While it may look easy to them to climb down facing outward into the room, it is safer to climb down facing the ladder and holding on securely.
Respect the manufacturers' weight restrictions! Some bunk beds are constructed to handle up to 400 lbs. on the top bunk, but not all are. Read the accompanying safety materials to determine the weight limit. If none came with your recycled bunk bed, a medium-sized adult (approximately 200 lbs.) should climb to the top bunk to check the sturdiness and rigidity of the frame. Determine a maximum weight and do not allow a heavier person to use the top bunk.
Caution your children not to jump on a bunk bed (ever) - either on the upper or lower bed. Bunk beds are not designed for it. While the dangers of jumping on the top are obvious, even jumping on the bottom can weaken the entire structure or result in banged heads.
Overall Bunk Bed Safety
Place the bunk bed tightly against the wall to prevent children from becoming trapped between the bunk and wall. Use both long-side guardrails and caution your children from trying to slip down the back of the bed to the lower bunk.
Regularly check that the ladder, the guardrails, and other parts are tightly screwed down and properly in place. Fixtures loosen over time, so look over the whole structure once a month and tighten loose screws.
Hanging items from any part of the bunk bed is dangerous. Kids may reach over the edge for them, swing from them, and generally risk falling off or strangling.
All children benefit from a nightlight that will help them use the bunk or loft safely. Soft red lights allow dark-adapted eyes to see enough to get down without jarring them into a permanent awake state in the middle of the night.
Watch your children get up and down a half dozen times before leaving them alone with the bunk bed. Advise them on the safe ways to enter and leave the top bunk and ask them to show that they understand by doing it.
Following these simple safety tips should help you and your family enjoy your bunk or loft bed free of injury! Don't forget that bunk beds also come in futon designs that enable you to have a futon sofa as the bottom bunk. There you can read to your child before bedtime - a sure way to calm things down and engender a lifelong love of reading!

Bunk Beds For Kids
By Danny Carter
Bunk beds have become a very useful and popular piece of any child's bedroom; they not only create maximum space in cramped bedrooms but are useful for having two or more kids in one room. They allow two children to sleep in the same room while maximizing available floor space. They normally are supported by four poles at each corner of the bed; however some are made with only three. To use the top bunk a ladder is fitted, though many children make it their main objective to find their own way up quicker. The top bunk is normally surrounded by some sort of railing to prevent the sleeper from falling out easily.
They are efficient space savers but if your child is not told how to use them properly accidents can happen so be aware of this. Each year; hundreds of thousands of children go to hospital for emergency room treatment for injuries associated with bunk beds? These injuries are minor and can occur when children fall from the top bunk, children playing and fighting frequently contributes to these accidents. Teaching your child that playing rough around any piece of furniture can be dangerous is vital, make sure they fully understand. There are even "thankfully rare" instances of very serious accidents associated with bunk beds that have suffocation or hanging deaths.
To keep your children safe here are some tips you can follow:
One very important tip is not letting any child under the age of six sleeps on the top bunk or even accesses it for that matter, doing this will allow for minimum accidents to occur.
Another important tip is to always use two side guardrails on the upper bunk! Guardrails help to prevent many accidents like falls from the top bunk. Children move around during sleep and may roll out of bed into the floor, this helps stop this.
Make sure your children know how, and if not should be told and shown how, to use the ladder at all times and not to try to climb the bed to the top. They should also be reminded that bunk beds are used for sleeping and rest time; bunk beds are not for fun and are certainly not toys! Following the previous tips should leave you and of course more importantly your child safe when sleeping and at peace of mind.
