Great computer with HD Screen, the new Windows 7 so user friendly, and I love the expanded keyboard - with numbers set off to the side. I was looking at laptops twice the price ($600-$700) when I saw this one pop up on the best sellers list for Amazon. The only difference between the higher price notebooks and this Compaq is that it does not have a webcam or 4 GB of memory - it only has 2 but is expandable to 4. You can't get a better laptop for the price $379. Very happy with my purchase!

Beware, if you think it has a HDMI!,

I just received this nice 15.6" notebook and I admit that I like it! The sound is great. The keypad is really handy when you need it. And the reponse of this computer is satisfying with windows 7 loaded. However, pictures in its product page might be a deceiving. Although they are shown in the pics, this model does NOT come with a webcam and HDMI. I was surprised when I opened the box and found this truth. Hence, I further digged into the specification sheet and found that I was wrong. Beware, if you think this is really a steal with a webcam and HDMI for this low price, you may just make a mistake like what I did. In all, I do not regret my decision of buying it at all. You can buy a netbook for $299.99. But I will pay a little bit more to go with this notebook ($379.99) with full capability, faster processing speed and a DVD burner in trade of the mobility. Now, I am going return my cute but slow netbook...

I am not a computer geek so will skip the technical mumbo-jumbo and give the laymans review... It works good. Ive had it for a couple weeks now and I have no complaints. Everything runs fast and smooth. The moniter is big and bright and clear. For what I do (web surfing, photo editing, media streaming) it works great. Also, I gotta say that I love Windows 7. To me it is a big leap forward from my previous operating system Windows XP.

got this about a week ago. the picture is amazing. very black blacks, extremely sharp color. paired with a sharp aquos blu-ray player, the aquos link system works very nicely. more than enough connections. menu/settings are pretty easy to access/understand. LED technology seems the way to go given the energy savings and life of the backlight, and sharp seems to have a winner here. interesting to me - if you upgrade to this from an old lcd hdtv, you'll notice a huge difference in the heat coming from the tv. the only downside are the speakers - they are clear enough but tiny and hollow. but this holds for every lcd tv on the market as far as i am concerned, so i can't really hold this against sharp. like the previous reviewer said, as long as it proves reliable sharp has produced a tv that gives the best sony, samsung, and other sets a run for their money - at a much lower price. The biggest problem of bunk beds can be that it causes your bedroom to have a very crowded feel to it due to the large size of the bed. If you have a small room then the effect is multiplied, however if you have a large room then the size of the bunk bed will not really have much of an effect. In my experience sleeping on the top bunk, it can be very painful coming down the ladder in the morning when your muscles are all stiff and feel like they have zero energy output capability. You do get used to it after a couple of months but it is not very pleasant to have to climb down some vertical stairs first thing in the morning.

Another factor for consideration is the lack of sitting room it creates. The bottom bunk usually does not allow for any sitting up straight positions because the top bunk is too low and in the way. There are structures that come with the ability to turn the bottom mattress into a couch type seating area but it is an add on that does cost extra money. Sitting up on the top bunk is also inconvenient as there is not too much to do up there.

Things like watching television and playing computer games from up there can be a bit awkward. A single bed in contrast is very good seating area in almost any persons bedroom, especially for things like watching television and playing video games.

Spending lots of time at a desk is just a fact of modern living and working. Your computer desk had better be something you are comfortable with or you will be frustrated and irritated, even if just subconsciously.

If you like your desk and chair then you can be more effective and efficient with what you are doing. Many people try to make their work environment as comfortable as possible, and understandably so. But the desk itself is fundamental to your satisfaction. So feel free to set out those desk toys, plants, and a few pictures from home, but be especially sure to tend to the computer desk itself, or you will never be as happy as you could. Since a computer desk is so important, it is worth taking a look at some of the different types and configurations available to you.

First, let's start with something just a little odd, the standing computer desk. This is a style that I am very tempted by. It is constructed to be tall so that the user can stand while working. This has the obvious advantage of keeping the user more active and fit. It also has the obvious downside of forcing the user to stand. Sort of a double whammy situation. People who use this sort of desk report greater productivity and energy after a break-in period that allows their bodies to adjust to being vertical for longer periods of time than they might otherwise be used to.

Second, there are traditional sit down desks that are designed to be used in a corner. A corner computer desk has several advantages. They free up floor space in your work environment and allow for other interior design possibilities that otherwise would not be available. Like traditional designs, these have many options for storage both in drawers and above on shelves. Some have keyboard slides and built in file folder storage. Whether you prefer wood, metal or glass, a corner computer desk can be a great option.

Third are the L-shaped and U-shaped computer desk. I think these are really attractive and functional. They allow you to feel like you are sort of "in" your workspace. The large work surfaces of these styles is a big plus for many. It can be pretty frustrating when you have lots of materials to organize on your desk and there isn't enough room.

Fourth, the standard traditional executive type desk. These are big beautiful desks that exude quality and presence. One large work surface and lots of storage make this sort of desk satisfactory for many users. Many people like how they feel perched at their executive desk in a big leather chair across from their client (or kid). Maybe it's the intimidation factor, who knows. If you have the room and don't mind a bit heavier desk than normal, then this type may be just the thing for you.

Sustainable Modular Office Furniture Can Make Your Work Place Green!

I know that green is in these days, and I don't mean the color, but living green as in environmentally friendly. For those of us who thought doing something good for the environment meant recycling our milk cartons, cereal boxes and tomato sauce cans and riding our bike occasionally, the extent of the "green" industry may be a bit of a surprise. Not only can you build your home to be "green", but you can also get "green furniture". There are even companies who use "green" modular office furniture.

As a matter of fact, Canada has a Sustainable Building Task Force that finalized groundbreaking environmental specs for modular office furniture purchased under state contract. Several modular furniture manufacturers bid on the contract, which goes to show that companies did not find the idea outlandish and many of them had used sustainable practices for decades. A three year contract, from 2001 to 2004 was awarded to a US company, with the idea to reevaluate and upgrade the contract after that time.

So what was Canada looking for in their sustainable modular office furniture? Well, among other requirements, some specifications included a high level of recycled content in components and packaging, no CFCs and HCFCs used in foam production, and energy efficient lighting in the work stations.

Modular office furniture and other items in the green building industry are rated. The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) has a Green Building Rating System. This is a nationally accepted benchmark for design, construction and operation of green buildings. According to the LEED web site:

"LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building project meets the highest green building and performance measures. All certified projects receive a LEED plaque, which is the nationally recognized symbol demonstrating that a building is environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live and work."

LEED looks at five key areas of human and environmental health, and one of those categories is indoor environmental quality, and this includes how the building is furnished. There are more ways that your modular office furniture can be environmentally friendly that you may realize. LEED looks at the materials and resources of the furniture. This includes:

The amount of packing material used to deliver the items to the site. Is each piece individually boxed, or is it delivered in a large truck wrapped in blankets?

How much recycled content is in you modular office furniture?

Is it regionally manufactured (i.e. - within 500 miles of the job site to cut down on gas transmissions)?

Are renewable materials used in the furniture? Products made from plants that mature in 10 years or less decreases the impact on forests and longer life cycle plants.

Are the adhesives and finishes used on the modular office furniture nontoxic? This helps to reduce harmful VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) from the office.

Many companies find that with a little effort, they can start to take steps to make their furniture more environmentally friendly. After all, the environment is not improved by one person or company doing great things, but everybody doing a little bit.

Now, you may be wondering what this type of modular office furniture looks like, after all, cubicles can already look and feel like a box! But you would be surprised. Overall, most people wouldn't even know that your furniture is sustainably manufactured or made from partially recycled materials. When I was a kid I used to watch the workers in my Dad's office work away in their little modular office furniture cubicles. It was like watching little worker ants dutifully managing the one or two tasks that they had been assigned for life, thinking nothing of themselves. I didn't think the people seemed very happy. To me it seemed so drab and gray in there. The tables and desks didn't have any character, were usually heavy metal and much to small to be any real use. Everything was institutional and bland. Of course my Dad's office was different. He was the boss so he got to enjoy the perks of having his own office. No boring modular office furniture in there! It seemed so big and impressive. I remember a big leather studded chair and tall wall shelves full of important looking books and figurines. Plenty of tables and chairs, and even a couch. There were always stacks of file folders and papers on his desk that made me feel like I was in a very important place. We used to hide under his desk, or behind the large plants by the window. We could imagine that we were almost anyone in that place. But usually it was enough to know that Dad would protect us from anything as dreary as ordinary work tasks. I admit, it was a charmed youth! But, oh how the times have changed!

Now, as I sit here in my ergonomically correct office chair, surrounded by truly functional modular office furniture, I am struck with an irony. I am not the boss, but I have nicer furniture around me than my father did all those years ago in his lavish office. Modular office furniture has come so far. I have the privacy and quiet I need. I have lots of storage space and shelving. No more drab colors, but instead, a beautiful mahogany (well melamine anyway) desk, bookcase, and credenza. And all richly appointed, warm, and elegant. My work area is truly a versatile and functional surrounding, but at the same time stylish and welcoming. I don't dread coming into the office. How could I with modular office furniture appointed with designer handles, ball-bearing drawer slides and so much room for my projects that I can arrange everything just how I want it without feeling like my space cramps my style and creativity.

Wood File Cabinets - How To Select The Right One

File cabinets come in many sizes, styles and levels of quality. In addition to offering a way to organize and access your documents, file cabinets can also become flexible and useful pieces of furniture that can be used in almost any room of your home or office.

You can buy either metal or wood cabinets file. Wood, specifically solid oak, is the most attractive and durable material to look for. It will last a very long time and be an attractive addition to your home or office.

The many styles of solid wood file cabinets include Mission, Contemporary, and Traditional and come in several standard sizes, which include:

Letter sized file cabinets, which generally hold only 8.5" x 11" paper, but can also be used for 8.5" x 11" legal size files.

Legal size file cabinets, which generally hold both 8.5" x 14" and 8.5" x 11" paper.

Lateral file cabinets, which come with 2 or 3 drawers and generally hold 8.5 x 11" and 8.5" x 14" paper.

Personal file cabinets that are generally smaller and hold only 8.5 x 11" letter files

The letter or legal size file cabinet can be used the alternate way by moving the metal brackets.
Wood file cabinets are available with 2, 3, 4 or even 5 drawers. When deciding which one would work best for you, consider not only the amount of file storage needed, but also the other uses you have for the file cabinet as a piece of furniture. It could be used as an end table, a storage chest, a credenza, a DVD or video tape cabinet, a nightstand, or a place to keep your printer, fax machine, copier, or coffee machine.

If you want to place some of the above items desk height, a 2-drawer cabinet allows you a 30" high platform. If you line several up in a row you can have quite a large surface. A lateral file also offers you this advantage without a seam in the middle. For this purpose, look for file cabinets with flush sides so there won't be any gaps between the cabinets.

A 3-drawer file cabinet, which stands about 43" high, offers more storage per square foot of floor space and you can still put plants or other light items on top. A 4-drawer file cabinet, which is about 55" tall, offers a tremendous amount of storage, as does an even taller, but rare, 5-drawer file cabinet. We don't recommend putting anything other than a very light item on top.
SAFETY FIRST!

Any piece of furniture that is holding a lot of weight can be dangerous. An important safety issue with file cabinets is the danger of tipping and crushing. Large and heavy file drawers can cause the file to tip forward. Therefore, several things can be done to minimize this danger.
Do not fill the file on the top drawer while leaving lower drawers empty.

As mentioned above, do not open more than one drawer at a time.

Attach file cabinets to the wall to prevent tipping.

Where possible, put your heaviest items in bottom drawer (to act as an anchor).

Do not put attractive nuisances like TV's and games on top of tip prone furniture unless it is properly tethered. Children may climb up to retrieve the remote or turn on the TV with horrible consequences.

CHOOSE A HIGH-QUALITY WOOD FILE CABINET

The lowest quality wood file cabinets are generally made for self-assembly by the customer. This is usually more difficult than you expect and utilizes "cam" assembly hardware. You'll also want to stay away from file cabinets that are made of particleboard. Even though the tag might say it's made of wood, don't be fooled because that description might still be referring to particleboard, so beware. According to the Furniture Manufacturers Association, solid wood includes particleboard. What you really want to look for is SOLID wood-either solid oak, pine, or cherry.
Another thing to keep in mind is that in order to hold a lot of weight a file cabinet should have glue screws and clamps--not cam locks in particleboard.

Next, know the difference between printed grain, genuine wood veneer, and solid wood without particleboard. The easiest way to tell if a piece of furniture is made of solid wood is to look at how the grain is running. If the end grain runs the wrong direction (perpendicular to the other grain), it is most likely veneer. I'm not saying veneer doesn't have its place if properly done, however, you should not be misled and be able to purchase what you are looking for/know what you're looking at.

Wood drawers are best made with English Dovetailed joints. If a drawer is assembled with cams, it won't hold together. A drawer glued and stapled can be an acceptable assembly method if the staples are only holding the assembly together until the glue dries.

Another important element of a file cabinet is the hardware used to open the drawers. Check the runner system. Make sure it pulls out smoothly and evenly? How does the tracking system work? If the drawer pulls out less than 90%, you will loose storage space and it will be difficult to retrieve your documents from the back of the file. Euro type roller glides are unacceptable for any file cabinets. This type of roller system works with two interlocking wheels on a spindle and it can't take the heavy weight of a file drawer and will likely not last very long at all. The better glide system for file cabinets is a full ball bearing--full extension slide system with at least a 100 lb weight rating.

Also, consider whether or not you want to lock up your drawers. You can put a lock on each individual drawer. This is the easiest way to lock up any particular drawer from which you want to keep prying eyes. You can also lock up all the doors by using a key just on the top drawer and the mechanism will lock all the doors below. Interlocking systems on quality wood files can be a costly and sometimes can hang-up creating access problems.

The wise consumer will take all these pointers into consideration when selecting a wood file cabinet. If you stick to solid wood and good glides and stay away from self-assembly, you'll have good access to your files and your cabinet will last a very long time.

Loud music and even louder phone conversations may emanate through the shut door, but the odor wafting from under the door is a perfume-lotion-hair product-nail polish mixture putrid enough to make eyes water from three rooms away. Laundry still lines the floor, but hers is a mixture of dirty and clean, a dresser and laundry basket all in one.

The previous descriptions are very over dramatized, obviously, but there's a good chance that if there's a teenager living under your roof, his or her room is probably the most disheveled and may exhibit varying degrees of the aforementioned traits. If they are worse than described above, call in a hazmat team, if not, perhaps some new teen-friendly bedroom furniture can do the trick.

Organization is key for any room, but is especially important for a teen's bedroom. Add shelf and storage space with a new bed featuring under bunk drawers and a handy bookcase headboard, ideal for everything from schoolbooks to random knick-knacks. A tall 5-drawer chest or a 6-drawer dresser with mirror should help them remember what color the carpet is, while a compact student desk is a great option for organizing school stuff and providing a place to study. As wonderful as they are, bunk beds have inherent dangers associated with them. There is no substitute for sitting down with your child on Day 1 of the new bunk bed and carefully explaining the safety rules. Ask kids to repeat what you have told them to ensure that they have understood. Here are some basic safety tips to avoid injuries using a bunk bed. Some are for parents in the initial set up and some are for kids to remember every day that they use the bunks.

Top Bunk Safety

On the top bunk, use only mattresses sized to fit perfectly. The top bunk is generally a twin, so use only a twin-size mattress: 39" x 75".

Don't use a mattress more than 8" thick. The guardrails on most bunk beds are designed to accommodate up to an 8" thick mattress. Thicker mattresses place the sleeper too close to the top of the guardrail, rendering the rails ineffective in preventing falls.

Always use guardrails on all sides of the top bunk, particularly on the long sides. Check to ensure that the surface of the mattress is 5" or more below the top of the guardrails. If you need thick or heavy comforters on top of the mattress, you might want to select a thinner mattress so the sleeper stays well below the top of the guardrails. 6" thick mattresses are often sufficient for kids, whose lighter weight does not require extremely thick mattresses.

Never allow a child under 5 years old on the top bunk. While kids under 5 may be agile and have good climbing skills, they may need a few more years to refine their internal sense of caution and safety that would help them regulate their own behavior on the top bunk.

Teach children always to use the ladder for getting up and down from the top bunk. Many bunk and loft beds have slats on either end that may look like climbing structures that kids see at the playground. However, only the ladder is specifically designed to support their weight that is increasing with each passing year.

Teach children to climb the ladder only while facing the ladder. While it may look easy to them to climb down facing outward into the room, it is safer to climb down facing the ladder and holding on securely.

Respect the manufacturers' weight restrictions! Some bunk beds are constructed to handle up to 400 lbs. on the top bunk, but not all are. Read the accompanying safety materials to determine the weight limit. If none came with your recycled bunk bed, a medium-sized adult (approximately 200 lbs.) should climb to the top bunk to check the sturdiness and rigidity of the frame. Determine a maximum weight and do not allow a heavier person to use the top bunk.

Caution your children not to jump on a bunk bed (ever) - either on the upper or lower bed. Bunk beds are not designed for it. While the dangers of jumping on the top are obvious, even jumping on the bottom can weaken the entire structure or result in banged heads.

Overall Bunk Bed Safety

Place the bunk bed tightly against the wall to prevent children from becoming trapped between the bunk and wall. Use both long-side guardrails and caution your children from trying to slip down the back of the bed to the lower bunk.

Regularly check that the ladder, the guardrails, and other parts are tightly screwed down and properly in place. Fixtures loosen over time, so look over the whole structure once a month and tighten loose screws.

Hanging items from any part of the bunk bed is dangerous. Kids may reach over the edge for them, swing from them, and generally risk falling off or strangling.

All children benefit from a nightlight that will help them use the bunk or loft safely. Soft red lights allow dark-adapted eyes to see enough to get down without jarring them into a permanent awake state in the middle of the night.

Watch your children get up and down a half dozen times before leaving them alone with the bunk bed. Advise them on the safe ways to enter and leave the top bunk and ask them to show that they understand by doing it.

Held at the Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market, the meeting is centered on informing retailers on what they can do to balance support for sustainability and profits. Palecek pronounced that there is a way to keep a balance between the two. He said that it is possible especially with consumers also becoming aware of the threat of climate change. Palecek also went on to say that this awareness is more apparent on younger generation of buyers.

"The job for you is to understand and to help educate the consumer," said Palecek during the conference. The consumer needs to be aware of what is going on...There is an opportunity for younger people to get behind this."

During his speech at the said event Palecek related that his company started out with manufacturing bamboo baskets way back in the 70s. And as part of the company's dedication towards a sustainable future, they started offering products made from sustainable materials such as sea grass, wicker, rattan, and abaca. With the diversity in materials used for their products, the company was able to stay true to their commitment of protecting the environment.

"I brought this kind of material to the marketplace and people responded to it," said Palecek. "Recycling and using sustainable products go hand in hand. It makes all the sense in the world," he added.

Although Palecek said that there are ways through which furniture manufacturers can balance sustainability and profit, he said that there is still room for improvement. He pointed out that in packaging of items, plastics are still being used. Foams are also potentially dangerous to the environment and are also used in packaging furniture and other related goods such as crane mirrors.

"There is an unbelievable amount of energy wasted for packaging - it's billions of dollars," said Palecek. "Some of it is recycled, but for the most part, it is wasted product," he added.

During the SFC meeting, setting a standard can help retailers tell their consumers which products are manufactured without harming the environment. This shows that the industry is working hard to make the world a better place for future generations.

But with so many sofa styles how do you choose?

Decide on the style of back first. No other aspect of the sofa has a greater impact on the way it looks and feels.

There are four basic back types.

A loose cushion back, is a style that has removable and reversible back and seat cushions, giving you the option of turning them over to get the most wear.

The back cushions usually line up and matches the number of seat cushions (with the exception of the bench seat) and the casings are zipped for easy removal for cleaning and replacement of the inserts.

The comfort depends on the depth of the sofa but this back style generally appeals to a lot of people.

An attached cushion back sofa the cushions are not reversible because they are upholstered directly to the inside back of the sofa. They don't require any fluffing or rearranging, always maintaining a neat look.

Exposed leg styles consist of a bun foot, a tapered leg or a turned English leg with or without a castor and available in a number of different finishes.

Skirts can be of a traditional or dressmaker in length, sometimes with detailing like a box-pleat, shirred on the corners or a ruffle, or even embellished with a bullion fringe at the bottom.

Even if you've never been to Paris, you've probably seen them in movies or magazines: those colorful little French café chairs and tables that have been the hallmark of the Parisian cafe for over a hundred years.
