If you are thinking about investing in new bedroom furniture, you should always take into consideration the type of materials used in the construction. You should also take a look at the warranty. Honestly, solidly built furniture shouldn't require a warranty. Of course, manufacturers are now expected to include one, so even the best furniture is guaranteed. But still, think about some of those old family heirlooms that are still sitting in your house. They probably weren't warrantied. They didn't warranty items because at that time things were built to last.
Bedroom furniture was, at one time, built with the finest materials. Long gone are the days when handcrafting furniture from solid hardwoods is the standard. You can still buy finely crafted products, but all too often, manufacturers try to get away with mass producing bedroom furniture (and all types of furniture, for that matter) that is constructed of cheap materials and disguised by fancy wood veneers. Do yourself this favor before buying furniture: know exactly what it is that you are buying.
The best material for home furnishing is solid hardwood. Solid hardwoods, such as maple, cherry, or oak, are durable woods. These woods last through years and years of use. Screws, bolts, and nails are held in place solidly, and the wood doesn't split or crack easily. By contrast, you can also find bedroom furniture made of softer woods, such as pine or cedar. While these woods are less expensive, they tend to develop cracks over the years. Cedar remains a popular wood for certain pieces of bedroom furniture because of its natural beauty. And while it's not as durable as harder woods, it certainly will last longer than cheaply crafted and mass produced pieces, whose chipboard materials are hidden under well-placed veneers.
This is not to say that every time you have a product made with veneers it's going to be cheap materials beneath the veneers. You need to know the specifics before you buy. Find out what's underneath those veneers. Sometimes you will find that the products are built to last. It just takes some inquiry.
In addition to materials used, you should also know how the materials are being held together. A hugely important factor to consider is the types of joints used in construction. Dovetails are the best type of joints. Dovetail joints consist of a series of v-shapes that lock together. When buying bedroom furniture, be sure to find out about this as well. Some manufacturers just staple and glue the pieces together. Examine the joints before your buy anything.
Ideally, your bedroom furniture should outlast its warranty. Look for good materials and fine construction. Though you might pay more initially, buying wisely will save you comfort and money in the long run.
