Bunk beds have become a very useful and popular piece of any child's bedroom; they not only create maximum space in cramped bedrooms but are useful for having two or more kids in one room. They allow two children to sleep in the same room while maximizing available floor space. They normally are supported by four poles at each corner of the bed; however some are made with only three. To use the top bunk a ladder is fitted, though many children make it their main objective to find their own way up quicker. The top bunk is normally surrounded by some sort of railing to prevent the sleeper from falling out easily.
They are efficient space savers but if your child is not told how to use them properly accidents can happen so be aware of this. Each year; hundreds of thousands of children go to hospital for emergency room treatment for injuries associated with bunk beds? These injuries are minor and can occur when children fall from the top bunk, children playing and fighting frequently contributes to these accidents. Teaching your child that playing rough around any piece of furniture can be dangerous is vital, make sure they fully understand. There are even "thankfully rare" instances of very serious accidents associated with bunk beds that have suffocation or hanging deaths.
To keep your children safe here are some tips you can follow:
One very important tip is not letting any child under the age of six sleeps on the top bunk or even accesses it for that matter, doing this will allow for minimum accidents to occur.
Another important tip is to always use two side guardrails on the upper bunk! Guardrails help to prevent many accidents like falls from the top bunk. Children move around during sleep and may roll out of bed into the floor, this helps stop this.
Make sure your children know how, and if not should be told and shown how, to use the ladder at all times and not to try to climb the bed to the top. They should also be reminded that bunk beds are used for sleeping and rest time; bunk beds are not for fun and are certainly not toys! Following the previous tips should leave you and of course more importantly your child safe when sleeping and at peace of mind.
